Illinois School Board Member says US Flag ‘Nothing More than Toilet Paper to Me.’

Traci O’Neal Ellis, a board member of a school district in Elgin, Illinois, wrote on her personal Facebook page that the American flag “means nothing more than toilet paper to me.”

Obviously parents are infuriated, but Ellis refuses to apologize.

She was defending the NFL players who take a knee in protest during the national anthem, the Elgin Courier-News reported. O’Neal Ellis said that she’s “proud to stand with the sons of bitches on the field today,” the Illinois Family Institute reported, a comment referring to President Donald Trump’s remarks last Friday saying team owners should fire “son of a bitch” players who disrespect the anthem.

A screenshot of O’Neal Ellis’ post appeared on some Elgin-area Facebook pages, the paper said, which resulted in support for her as well as criticism.

Fellow school board member Jeanette Ward called O’Neal Ellis’ comments “despicable,” the Courier-News reported, citing a statement on Ward’s school board page.

“I was taken aback that she would say that, even though it is consistent with things she’s said in the past,” Ward told the paper Wednesday. “To say [the U.S. flag is]nothing more than toilet paper, I’m appalled.”

O’Neal Ellis added to the Courier-News Wednesday that she’s received “hateful, mean-spirited, scary” reactions from community members for her flag comment.

Ellis’ comments were forwarded by a concerned citizen to Ward, who re-posted the message with a few thoughts of her own.

“The was sent to me by a very concerned constituent,” Ward wrote. “A U-46 BOE colleague of mine has stated that our country’s flag means ‘nothing more than toilet paper’. I disagree in the strongest possible terms. Many patriotic Americans have shed their blood to defend the ideas and ideals America represents.

“To call it ‘nothing more than toilet paper’ is absolutely despicable and disgusting,” she wrote.

Ward reiterated her disgust to the Courier-News.

“I was taken aback that she would say that, even though it is consistent with things she’s said in the past,” Ward told the news site. “To say it’s nothing more than toilet paper, I’m appalled.”

But instead of simply apologizing for the crude comments, Ellis doubled down, attacked Ward, and alleged her comments have nothing to do with respect for military veterans, many of whom lost their lives for her freedom.

Ellis contends her family history is rife with examples of racism. And though she’s an attorney and sitting school board member, she alleges there’s no “justice and liberty” for black Americans.

“The flag and the anthem are symbols in this country of freedom and ‘justice and liberty’ for all,” Ellis posted to Facebook. “Yet that is a blatant lie for black folks.”

Ellis said she would not resign from the school board, adding that she never has disrespected the flag and always stands during the Pledge of Allegiance before board meetings.

“The example I am setting for students is that you have a right in this country to peaceful protest,” Ellis said. “You have freedom of speech in this country. You are not free from the consequences. The message that this sends to students is that when you stand up for truth as a marginalized person, a marginalized group, you will get backlash.”

Anti-American sentiment is rampant in our schools. Ellis DOES have the right to free speech. What she does not have the right to do is influence our schoolchildren with her anti-American crap! She did not stand for truth. She posted vile hatred for our flag.

Ward told the paper it wouldn’t surprise her if residents attended the next school board meeting and told O’Neal Ellis to step down.

“The remedy for that is elections,” Ward noted to the Courier-News. “If people are not happy about this, the remedy is the elections in 2019, if she chooses to run again.”

An online petition is circulating to get O’Neal Ellis removed from the board.
